Specimens

Collection & handling

  • Tubes: Serum (SST) or Plasma (per test requirements)
  • Allow clot (for serum), centrifuge per kit; avoid hemolysis/lipemia if possible
  • Label with two identifiers; maintain recommended temperature during transport

Include a completed requisition and ICD-10 codes with each specimen.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do chemistry panels require fasting?

Some do (e.g., lipid panel, fasting glucose). Follow the provider’s order and panel instructions.

What if the specimen is hemolyzed?

Hemolysis can impact certain analytes. SDI follows rejection/remark criteria and will note when recollection is recommended.

What is the typical turnaround?

Most chemistry results are reported within 24–72 hours after the specimen is received in the lab.
